Foil versus the inker you actually liked

Rows of bound volumes with gold-stamped spines

Foil is a production choice that photographs like wealth and reads like fog. On a Marvel NFT cover the shine layer often sits above the ink, so feathering that once described a cheekbone becomes a dull plateau.

Title bars suffer next. A yellow masthead on gold is a contrast problem, not a branding triumph. Several wraps we opened this spring needed the title described as a collision, not as trade dress.

Virgin foil is a special case. Without a logo, the shine has to justify itself as costume metal or city light. When it is applied as a full-sheet effect, the drawing underneath is demoted to a watermark.

Collectors who only see chat thumbnails miss this. Ask for a non-shine view, or sit with the file until the metal stops entertaining you. Then decide whether the inks are still there.
